Synthesis of phenyl-2-nitropropene

The synthesis of 1-phenyl-2-nitropropene. A solution of benzaldehyde (7.1 mL, 70 mmol) and butylamine (26 mL, 260 mmol) in benzene (150 mL) was stirred at reflux for 6 h using a Dean-Stark trap to remove water. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness to yield the imine as a yellow oil.
